“Hajat di hati nak bergerek, apakan daya kaki ku patah…”

bicycle-kids

“Hajat di hati nak bergerek, apakan daya kaki ku patah…”
LET me introduce to you an idiom i created myself for the situation that overwhelmed my condition nowadays.

This idiom have two different interpretations, at least,  yet can be interchange with one another, depending on how is one’s perception, of course.

To explained the exact definition and what have happened to me that makes me come-up with this idiom, let me clarify the meaning of gerek.

Gerek (pronounced geghek) derived from a northern Peninsular malay slang meaning bicycle.  Hence the idiom above can be translated as “Wish that i could ride a bicycle, but I have a broken leg” – easily interpreted as one who wish he could accomplish a task but has to confront with a condition which makes him incapable to fulfill it.

Kaki ku patah (literally broken leg) explained one condition when you are unable to go anywhere, often because of the lack of transportation. People always exclaimed that if their vehicle is broken or in the workshop, their legs are also `broken’…

Another meaning of gerek, derived from Sarawakian language, bores the meaning of lover. Heh, you get the idea…. Bergerek, in Sarawakian is having a lover. Hence this idiom is translated that one wish to have a lover but unable to go somewhere to get it. This idiom is well suited for the people who are having a long distance relationship (LDR).

Arrrrr, I’m having all the above condition at the same time…

The closest old-school idiom for the above is the hyperbolic “Hajat di hati nak peluk gunung, apakan daya tangan ku tak sampai” (Wish that I could hug a mountain, however my hands could not reach it).

P.S.: My Gerek above is different form the one you can find in MTV Gerek Seh! hihihihi

YES, I'm back for blogging, I hope.

Sorry for abandoning this blog for too long... Not much action happened with me lately that is worthwhile to blog about. ehehee.

Just to share to you some new post, for example a new way to park your car without paying the parking fees any more...

The road is straight, but the car still veered to the ditch mysteriously...

Closer view

Closer

Arr... Probation licence! ehehehe

Er, that car is not mine. Just saw it 'parked' perfectly in a ditch of a straight road this morning.

Well this week, 2nd Annual Cup Prix will be held. Will post about it later...

This is just a start,.. at the mean time, please enjoy this video I made for you all...

Aidil Adha 2009 (10 Zulhijjah 1430H)

HARI Raya Haji, or the "pilgrimage festival", marks the end of a Muslim's pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, it commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail in an act of obedience to God.

This year is a special year for my family, because we decided to sacrifice a bull. A first timer indeed…

The bull arrived two nights ago, earlier than expected, which forced us to tied the bull in the courtyard of the village's surau. And I have to attend the bull.

It was a nerve wrecking moment to be face to face with the cow. But in the end, I grew fond of him. isk isk isk

And our short encounter does taught me the meaning of sacrifice…

Salam Hari Raya Aidil Adha for all the muslim readers. Biar berkorban, jangan terkorban semasa raya… Hati-hati di jalan raya.

Home Meals

ONCE a while, having a nice kampung-styled meals, cooked by mum is just like a heaven for me. This time there is no midin, a type of fern which most people taken for granted but a favourite dish among Sarawakian.

Yet, in the line of shrimp season, my mum prepared a great food for the family. In the end, I had two serving of rice. Brrrppph... Excuse me. :P

ikan salai masak lemak cili api
(smoked fish with white curry)

cencaluk dengan mangga muda
(young mangoes with pickled shrimp)

sambal ikan bilis dan petai
(Petai, a type of pungent bean, with anchovies in sweet and hot chilies)

A day in the Market, Dabai Odyssey

Sibu's market, managed by Sibu Municipal Council

AFTER having out first lunch together since Ramadhan with Lim, a friend of mine, I decided to ask Lim to accompany me to the nearby market.

“What for?” he asked. “I don’t like to mingle with so many crowds” he added.

“Then, wait till they build the market by the cemetery…” I answered sinically. Reluctantly, he followed me to the market.

It has been a while since I visit the market. I love to watch people there. I love to see what type of stuff the sold there. I love the open air window-shopping. And I finally found what I came for…

Buah dabai’s (dabai fruit) season has arrived.

This is dabai fruit

One of my long waited delicacies, dabai is black fruit with a large pit (or stone) which we always consumed together with soy sauce or salts during our heavy meals. It was very hard at first, but will eventually soften after being soaked in lukewarm water for at least 15 min.

soaked in lukewarm water

add soy-souce

brpphh! excuse me...

What does it taste like? Erm, get half spoonful of your favorite best margarine, add a pinch of salt and sugar and enjoy! That is the closest taste I can tell you.

Last week dabai was priced at RM 20.00 per kilo, since the availability was limited. Now, you can get it from as RM 8.00 to RM 12.00 per kilo, depending the size and quality. I bought the best I could find at RM 8.00. In earlier time, it was sold in chupak or kong (in small tin can size, if you wonder). Now in kilos.

Not just dabai, I also found a variety of local delicacies today. From buah engkalak (acquired taste), to terap (ever heard of a pantun `buah terap berderap-derap’ and wondered what does it look like?) to the famous ulat mulong (live beetle-worm found in the bark of Sago Palm).

Tried to be brave by putting one of the worms onto my palm. But the facts it wriggle vigorously and can bite make me pass the thought. Ehehe

Come, and visit Sibu... And I will show you more!

Dared to try? Can be fried or eaten raw and alive. Taste as peanut, they said.

By the way, did I forgot to mentioned about the durians? Erm...
